Drawing your own pixel cat

What is an easy shape for my first pixel cat?

Start with a front-facing sitting cat: two pointed ears, a broad head, a smaller body, two front paws and a curved tail. Keep a gap between the paws and tail so they do not read as one block. A dark outline and a lighter chest are enough to establish the shape before you add fur markings.

How is a tiny 16-pixel cat different from a 128 × 128 image?

The small icons use a much coarser underlying grid. Enlarging them to a 128 × 128 file makes each original pixel a larger square; it does not add detail. The detailed illustrations use more small shapes. Choose the coarser style for a simple icon and more detail for a larger scene.

Why does my converted cat photo look different from these sprites?

A photo conversion preserves lighting and fur texture, while a sprite deliberately simplifies the ears, eyes, paws and outline. Use your photo as a starting point, then redraw those features in the editor and remove background detail if you want a clearer cartoon cat.

How can I make a black pixel cat readable?

Keep the ear tips and tail separate from the body outline. Use a contrasting background and a small eye highlight. If the paws merge into the belly, leave a narrow background gap between them before adding extra shading.

How can I keep the tail in an animated cat GIF?

Use a consistent canvas for every frame and leave room for the widest tail position. When importing the GIF into the Pixel Art Maker, choose “Fit whole image” and preview the timeline before exporting GIF. Cropping tightly around a single frame can cut off the tail or feet in another frame.

How do I export my cat at exactly 128 × 128?

Choose a 128 × 128 canvas and select “1× — Original pixel size” in Download size. The 8× option produces a 1024 × 1024 file from that canvas. Check the export size rather than judging it by the enlarged editor preview.

Start with ears.
Give it a personality.

Draw a small silhouette, try a different pose or build a short cat animation in the Pixel Art Maker.
