Number 4 pixel art questions

Should 4 have an open top?

Both constructions can read clearly. An open top may keep more background space at small sizes, while a closed top needs a distinct triangular counter.

What should I keep when simplifying digit 4 to a small grid?

Choose the open-top or closed-top version before adjusting stroke thickness. Compare the simplified silhouette with the larger example at native size; do not judge only from a magnified preview.

Can I combine digit 4 with other characters?

Yes. Keep a common cap height or numeral height, baseline and stroke weight. For a counter or date, compare this digit with its neighbors and keep the spacing consistent as the value changes.

Is the 4 GIF a drawing animation?

No. The example GIF floats the entire finished glyph in a short eight-frame loop. It does not reveal stroke order, and each exported frame remains 128 × 128 pixels.

Build your own 4.

Choose the open-top or closed-top version before adjusting stroke thickness. Try a simpler grid first, then refine the finished pixels.
