Axolotl pixel art questions

Why does my axolotl look like an ordinary lizard?

Make the external gills a separate visible shape on both sides of the head where the view allows it. Keep the head broad and preserve the fin-like tail rather than making it a thin pointed line.

How do I keep the gills inside a square crop?

Fit the full subject and leave extra space around the widest gill position. A face crop based only on the eyes and mouth will usually cut off the feature that identifies the animal.

Why are my pink gills hard to see?

They may have similar lightness to the body or background. Reserve a darker pink for the gill edges and avoid scattering highlights across every branch. Preview the result at 128 × 128, not only as an enlarged canvas.

Does the GIF show swimming?

No. The outlined axolotl gently bobs as a whole illustration. For a swimming animation, plan tail-fin changes and small limb movements on a fixed canvas, keeping the gills inside every frame.

Make the gills your starting point

Set out a broad head, give the gill branches room and choose a tail curve that fits your square canvas.
