One year of RGB desk-lighting cost includes the electricity of the complete lighting system plus any purchase and necessary setup costs. Count strips, controllers and connected low-power operation, but do not count a controller twice if a meter already measures the whole kit. Length, brightness and selected effects belong with the consumption reading; one label is not every mode’s measured draw.
Decide what the measurement includes
List the strip kit, any separate controller or hub and other illuminated desk devices you want to budget. Measure or obtain the applicable consumption for the exact configuration. A whole-kit wall reading already includes components powered through that kit; a separate hub on another supply needs its own entry.
Govee’s Strip Light 2 Pro page describes different effects and brightness controls. Use the actual selected mode when estimating your system; the controls do not establish an exact percentage saving for a particular brightness change.
Calculate active and connected-off energy separately
EIA’s watts-to-kilowatt-hours explanation supplies the unit conversion. Annual energy is the sum of each state’s watts × daily hours × 365 ÷ 1,000. Multiply the total by your applicable $/kWh rate.
Illustrative system only: assume 18W for a strip plus 2W for a separately counted controller during five active hours, then 1W total for the complete connected system during the remaining 19 hours. Assume $0.20/kWh; none of these numbers is a Govee or Divoom measurement.
| Assumed component/state | Annual energy |
|---|---|
| Strip: 18W × 5 hours/day | 32.85 kWh |
| Controller: 2W × 5 hours/day | 3.65 kWh |
| Whole connected system: 1W × 19 hours/day | 6.935 kWh |
| Total | 43.435 kWh; $8.69 at the assumed rate. |
If a meter instead shows 20W for the complete active kit, use that one active entry rather than adding the 2W again. DOE explains why apparently off devices can still consume energy; a connected low-power state and a fully disconnected state are different inputs.
Budget an illuminated display as a separate device
A smart clock or pixel display may add a wanted information role alongside strip lighting. Include its actual consumption and purchase separately; do not assume it is included in the strip measurement or that replacing one category preserves the other’s function.

The Divoom Times Gate smart display lists five 128×128 LCD screens and customizable RGB edge effects. It is a separate time/data-and-visual device, not a distributed light strip. Its listed features do not supply a measured annual energy cost or make it a task-light substitute.

Compare smart pixel displays only if that additional role is wanted. For a simpler visual arrangement, consider how a pixel display fits a non-RGB desk before assuming the room needs more lighting hardware.
Add setup costs before calling the result a total
Add the actual kit price, required controller or hub, mounting supplies and applicable tax/delivery to the year’s electricity. Mark included parts and existing equipment so they are not purchased twice. A shorter schedule changes the energy term; it does not refund the hardware purchase. Compare alternatives over the same year and the same wanted lighting role.
